Tough economy cuts into plans for vacations The sinking U.S. economy has touched a hallowed tradition: the family vacation. According to a USA Today/Gallop poll, 58 percent of Americans who usually take an annual vacation away from home will shrink their spending this year or simply not go. Further, travel research consultants D.K. Shifflet & Associates and HIS Global Insight forecast Americans will spend about 10 percent less–a total of $30 billion–on leisure travel this spring and summer.
