Cruise into AAA offices for big vacation event

October is National Cruise Vacation Month and AAA, along with Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), will host the World’s Largest Cruise Night on Oct. 16.

All AAA Travel offices will be open until 7 p.m. on Oct. 16 as part of the promotion. Participating cruise lines include Holland America Line, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara Cruises, Princess Cruises, Cruise West, Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas and Cunard Line.

Join AAA Travel for Cruise Week Oct. 13–18. AAA members will receive benefits, from upgrades to onboard credits, for booking a cruise through AAA Travel. Book a cruise valued at $1,000 or more (excluding air fare) during Cruise Week and receive a $50 Visa gift card.

A cruise vacation remains a great value, especially during a time when travelers are making every dollar count.

“One of the top reasons cruises are so popular is the outstanding value they represent,” said Terry L. Dale, president and CEO of CLIA.

Reed center to open in Biloxi

The Pleasant Reed Interpretive Center, located on the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art (OOMA) campus in Biloxi, will open Sept. 29 with a ceremony befitting the building’s history and the lives of its owners.

The center interprets the lives of Reed, a former slave, and his family. Born in 1854, Reed eventually built the home that was claimed by Hurricane Katrina. The center is a replica of his home. It interprets how a black family of limited means lived in Biloxi during the early 20th century.

To celebrate the opening, the Delta Sigma Theta sorority will conduct a traditional sankofa, a candlelight ceremony from Ghana that looks to the past while anticipating the future. Many blacks were taken from that African country during the slavery era. The free event will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The center will be open by appointment and offer two exhibits and a film about Reed and his family. While construction on the OOMA east campus continues, the museum’s transitional location is at 1596 Swetman St. Call (228) 374-5547 or visit www.georgeohr.org for more information.

Eat well while traveling

Taking a vacation doesn’t have to require leaving a sensible eating plan at home. AAA Tourism Editor Jean Marie Principe anonymously visits hundreds of restaurants in a year to gather information used in AAA TourBooks®. She offers these tips to leisure and business travelers for eating right while on the road.

  • The way of the buffet. Many AAA approved hotels offer a breakfast buffet in the price of the room. Skip the pastries and select items like yogurt, fresh fruit or oatmeal.
  • Portion control is important. As soon as you’ve had enough, as the waiter to remove the plate.
  • Navigate through the free hotel treats like chocolate and cookies. As the housekeeping staff for an extra bottle of water instead.

Eat healthy and trim your travel budget by enjoying a meal at these Show Your Card & Save restaurant partners: Joe’s Crab Shack, Landry’s Seafood House, Muer Seafood Restaurants and The Crab House.

For information on these and regional restaurants, visit www.AAA.com/savings.
