High School students can compete for thousands in Travel Challenge

Published: Nov/Dec 2002

Do you know the capital of North Dakota? Or the name of the three seas that border Turkey? How about the name of the island at the end of Italy’s boot?

High school students who are adept at geography can turn information like that into money when they enter the AAA Travel High School Challenge. Students across the country in ninth through 12th grade are eligible for the contest, which will offer $156,000 in college scholarships to the top winners from the Hogan Family Foundation.

The first phase of the contest will be Web-based. In January, students can log onto www.aaa.com/travelchallenge, where they will take a timed, multiple-choice travel and geography test. The five students with the best scores in each state will advance. In the event of ties, winners will be chosen via a random drawing of the tied contestants.

The top five achievers in each state will then take a written test in March in their own states, and the top scorer will advance to the finals in May 2003 at Universal Orlando in Florida. Each of the state winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship and will be flown to the final contest.

Another test will determine the top six finalists, who will then face off in teams of three in a game-show format. The three first-place winners will receive a $25,000 scholarship each, and the three second-place winners will be awarded $10,000 in scholarships each.

The contest is designed to enhance geographic literacy in America and expose students to the opportunities available in travel and tourism. Some of the contest sponsors include: Continental Airlines, Holland America Line, Marriott, MBNA America, Pleasant Holidays and Universal Orlando.
