You can save a life this summer by donating blood

Published: Jul/Aug 2002

As you plan your summer vacation and make lists of things to pack, don’t forget to leave one thing behind–your blood.

The American Red Cross is appealing to Americans to remember to donate blood this summer to meet the growing need. While collections surged following the events of Sept. 11, they have fallen off since then, and the Red Cross is reminding donors that blood is a perishable commodity and must be regularly replaced.

Each single blood donation may help as many as three patients. One pint of blood can be separated into its various components–red cells, plasma and platelets–and given to patients with different needs. Donors touch the lives of many people, from newborn babies to cancer patients, hemophiliacs, accident victims and more.
