Eureka Springs named distinctive destination

Published: Jul/Aug 2001

In looking for the best-preserved and most unique communities in the country, the National Trust for Historic Preservation found Eureka Springs, Ark., overflowing with charm and named the city one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations.

In its second year of compiling the list, the National Trust looked for communities with a dynamic downtown, commitment to historic preservation, interesting and attractive architecture, cultural diversity, an economic base of locally owned small businesses and walkability for residents and visitors. Eureka Springs was the only city in the region chosen.

Helping make Eureka Springs distinctive are its Victorian architecture, an array of attractions and its commercial district that includes more than 150 independent and unique stores and restaurants. Amazingly, no national chain stores or restaurants are present in the quaint historic district.
