AAA urges motorists to hang up on their cell phone usage to be safe

Driver distractions cause up to 8,000 traffic crashes on U.S. roads every day, so AAA is urging motorists to avoid one of the most obvious distractions: cell phone use.

In a new brochure, “Cell Phones and Driving: Drive Now, Talk Later,” AAA examines the driver distraction issue and offers tips on safe driving. The free brochure points out that drivers are not only distracted when they take their hands off the wheel and their eyes off the road, but also when they take their minds off driving.

Driver distractions include anything that can take a driver's attention away from the important task of driving, including eating, smoking, adjusting the radio and talking on a cell phone. Each can increase your chances of being involved in a crash.

Studies show that intellectual activities distract drivers to a point at which their ability to drive safely and control the vehicle is reduced. In one study, drivers were given simple concentration exercises to perform while driving. Although none of the exercises required drivers to remove their eyes from the road, performing the exercises significantly diminished the subjects' ability to drive. Specific changes in driving behavior included tunnel vision, decreased road scanning and decreased use of rear mirrors.

While hands-free phones allow drivers to keep their hands on the wheel, such devices are not risk-free. The conversation can distract the driver more than the phone itself.

AAA recommends that drivers not use their cell phones while driving. If using a cell phone in the car is essential, the guide offers several safety tips. For instance, motorists should use their cell phone at a safe time and place. Ask a passenger in the car to place the call for you, and if possible, to speak in your place. Hang up the phone as soon as possible, especially in heavy traffic and hazardous weather conditions.
