Steer clear of driving hassles while abroad with information from AAA

Published: Nov/Dec 2000

On a trip abroad, trying to figure out what type of license you’ll need, how to apply for one and which side of the road to drive on can be like learning a foreign language.

But AAA can serve as your interpreter.

With a few keystrokes of your computer, you can learn which countries recognize U.S. drivers licenses and which ones require International Driving Permits (IDPs). Just log onto www.aaa.com and click on Travel Services to find details on international permits.

The site contains comprehensive information about international driving permits, which were initiated through a 1949 treaty that was signed by the United States and other countries. In addition to a list of what type of license countries require, it contains answers to frequently asked questions about IDPs.

Similar in size to a passport, an IDP includes the information on a U.S. driver’s license in 10 languages and is accepted in more than 150 countries. Carried in conjunction with a regular driver’s license, the IDP can break down language barriers when traveling in non-English speaking countries.

There are some countries that do not recognize a driver’s license from the United States but officially recognize an IDP, for example, Spain. The IDP can satisfy these types of situations.

While many countries may not require visitors to possess an IDP, it is still advisable to carry one. Regardless of where you are, many car rental companies require foreign visitors to present an IDP as a condition of rental. Even if driving while overseas is not in your plans, an IDP will provide an extra photo identification should you need it.

Many people have arrived at their overseas destination only to realize they need to contact AAA in the United States to purchase an IDP. If you’re planning to tour an exotic locale, valuable time can be lost while securing a permit, since documents would have to be sent overseas via an express courier.

To avoid potential hassles, AAA service offices offer IDPs to all holders of U.S. driver’s licenses. Drivers must be at least 18 and are required to complete a brief application form. The permit costs $10 and is valid for up to one year from the date of issue.

Applicants also need two passport-size photos, which are available at most AAA offices for $5 for members and free for AAA Plus members.

Members also can print the IDP application online. If transacting by mail, all the items need to be mailed to a AAA office in the United States, including the photos with your signature on the back of them, a photocopy of your valid U.S. driver’s license, and cash or a money order for $10.
