Hannibal bridge open

Published: Nov/Dec 2000

A bridge to the 1800s is now open.

After years of planning, hard work and dedication, the $55 million Mark Twain Memorial Bridge has opened, linking northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois. The bridge is located at Hannibal, which has retained its 1800s atmosphere by preserving the cobbled streets and some of the buildings from Twain’s youth, including his home.

Named in honor of Twain’s significant influence on his hometown, the four-lane bridge connects Interstate 72 from Illnois with state Route 36 in Missouri, crossing the Mississippi River.
