Circus elephant finds sanctuary in Arkansas

Published: Sep/Oct 2000

An injured circus elephant has found a home in the pachyderm paradise known as Riddle's Elephant and Wildlife Sanctuary in central Arkansas.

The elephant, named Digger, is a 17-year-old African male who has lived most of his life in a circus. He was injured by a larger elephant last year, and it is expected that his recovery will be lengthy.

But in the company of 10 other elephants, he will be able to regain his strength at the nonprofit sanctuary, which is dedicated to both Asian and African elephants. It is the first and only facility to accept any elephant in need and provide them with a peaceful, permanent refuge.

The site offers guests a chance to participate in the elephants’ care and feeding for a fee. For more details about the sanctuary, located north of Conway off Highway 25, call (501) 589-3291 or visit the Web site www.elephantfarm@alltel.net.
