Advice for Trouble-Free Auto Repair

An informed and careful consumer can avoid many of the hassles sometimes associated with automotive repairs. To help motorists avoid auto repair headaches, AAA offers the following advice for dealing with an auto repair facility:
  • Never sign a blank work order. Be wary of blanket statements such as “check and correct transmission noise” or “repair engine”. You could wind up with a new transmission or engine.
  • Write a description of your car’s symptoms. Don’t tell the service advisor what you think needs to be fixed or replaced unless it’s obvious.
  • Make an appointment. If the shop owner knows you are coming and has a rough idea of the problem, he or she can assign the right person to the job and allow enough time to get it done properly.
  • Get a second opinion for major repairs. You may have to pay a small diagnostic fee but it can be a good investment.
  • Ask questions. It’s your car and your money. You have the right to understand what repair work is being done and why.
  • Always get an estimate in writing. Oral estimates can be disputed or forgotten. This is particularly important when major work is involved, such as an engine overhaul or transmission replacement. Insist that the shop call if the repair cost will exceed the estimated price.
  • Ask to see any replaced parts. You may even want to keep them, unless the shop has to return them to the manufacturer for warranty or a supplier for rebuilding. With the original parts and a well-documented repair receipt, you have solid evidence if the work proves unsatisfactory.
  • Take a test drive. If the car isn’t running right, don’t take it home. If you discover that the problem is not solved after you leave the shop, take the vehicle back as soon as possible and ask to speak with the service manager or shop owner.

To take much of the worry out of auto repair, always try to have your vehicle serviced at a reputable repair facility, such as those recognized by AAA’s Approved Auto Repair program.
